YouTube today announced that Shorts video creators would soon be able to include up to a minute of copyrighted music in their Shorts, which is the latest attempt by YouTube to allure TikTok creators onto YouTube Shorts. The new length limit for any licensed song is a significant improvement over the previous 15-second restriction.

According to YouTube, “for most tracks,” short-form makers will be able to use between 30 and 60 seconds of legally obtained audio. Some songs, whose licencing agreements determine which tracks fall in which window, will continue to be limited to 15 seconds. In the audio selector of the YouTube app, creators may immediately discover how long each song permits. On iOS and Android, the new song-length options will roll out starting today and continuing “over the next few weeks.”

Aggressive DMCA take down notices have become a burden for broadcasters on all platforms as the number of user-generated videos has skyrocketed over the past ten years. Copyright enforcement by record labels is frequently automated, which results in exaggerated allegations. For instance, content producers have had their videos disallowed because they unintentionally used a brief segment of copyrighted audio from a passing car’s stereo. In order to stop bystanders from sharing their lawfully obtained films, some police officers have even used the DMCA to their advantage by blasting Taylor Swift songs.

The song-limit increase is YouTube’s most recent effort to lure TikTok creators (and consequently viewers and advertising revenue) to Shorts. Regardless of whether they use music, the company announced a programme in September to share ad revenue and give qualified creators a 45 per cent cut. TikTok introduced a comparable sharing programme earlier this year in response to widespread criticism of its prior “static pool of money” strategy.

Shorts reports views from more than 1.5 billion logged-in people each month, suggesting that YouTube’s aggressive strategy is working. TikTok had amassed 1 billion monthly users as of September 2021. However, those figures probably include users who were already on YouTube watching other content due to YouTube’s overall dominance in the video space. On the other hand, TikTok’s statistics more obviously include users searching for its unique short-form videos, an audience that YouTube and other media behemoths like Meta are still vying for.
