Google has updated its language translate tool, Google Translate, with 24 new languages. Google translate now supports a total of 133 languages which is used worldwide. The newly added languages ​​include Assamese, Bhojpuri, Sanskrit, and many more. The Cupertino-based tech giant highlighted that the newly added languages ​​are used by over 300 million people globally.

For example, the company said ‘Mizo’ (language) is spoken by about 800,000 people in India’s far northeast, and Lingala (a Bantu language which is used by more than 8 million people as a lingua franca in northern parts of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire) is spoken by more than 45 million people throughout Central Africa.

Here’s a list of the new languages ​​which is now available in Google Translate:

Sanskrit is used by about 20,000 people in India.
Bhojpuri is used by about 50 million people in Northern India, Nepal, and Fiji.
Assamese is used by about 25 million people in Northeast India.
Aymara, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru are used by about two million people.
Bambara is used by about 14 million people in Mali.
Dogri is used by about 3 million people in Northern India.
Ewe is used by approximately seven million people in Ghana and Togo.
Guarani is used by about seven million people in Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil.
Ilocano is used by about 10 million people in Northern Philippines.
Konkani, used by about 20 lakh people in Central India.
Krio, used by about four million people in Sierra Leone.
Kurdish (Sorani), used by about eight million people, mostly in Iraq.
Lingala is used by approximately 45 million people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola and the Republic of South Sudan.
Dhivehi is used by around 300,000 people in the Maldives.

Zero-Shot Machine Translation

Google claims these are the first languages ​​they’ve added using zero-shot machine translation, where a machine learning model only sees monolingual text, that is, it learns to translate into another language without looking at examples.
