Polling for the final phase of Bihar assembly elections concluded on Saturday for 78 constituencies including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Katihar, Madhepura, Saharsa, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Samastipur. The polling for final phase began at 7 am and recorded 55% voter turnout till 5 pm. Kishanganj district recorded the highest 59.99 per cent polling till 5 pm while Katihar recorded 48.4 per cent the lowest in the state. Taking precautionary measures on the polling booth, about 2.34 crore voters locked the fates of 1204 candidates, including 12 cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from this, four ministers are in the fray from the NDA, Pramod Kumar, Suresh Sharma, Binod Narayan Jha Benipatti and Krishnakumar Rishi. Subhashini Yadav, the daughter of former Janata Dal heavyweight Sharad Yadav, is another keenly watched candidate in the final phase of Bihar election. She is contesting from Bihariganj on a Congress ticket while her father was a multiple-time MP from Madhepura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the candidates in the fray, 37 belong to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar\u2019s JDU, 35 to the BJP, while five are contesting on tickets of junior NDA ally Vikassheel Insaan Party and one from the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) of Jitan Ram Manjhi. The Tejashwi Yadav-led RJD is fighting on 46 seats in the final phase, while ally Congress has fielded its candidates in 25 seats. Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, which is an ally of the Mahagathbandhan in this election for the first time, has fielded candidates on five seats in the final phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As ever, the election also became an occasion for people to highlight deficiencies in governance. Residents of Simaria Panchayat in Triveniganj Assembly constituency which falls in Supaul district boycotted polling on Saturday, claiming the road in their area has not been constructed for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the three-phase Bihar assembly elections are slated to come to a close on Saturday evening, an independent candidate named Sanjay Jha from Benipatti in Madhubani district died of coronavirus at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Jha, a former Janata Dal-United leader, rebelled against the party after he was denied ticket from Benipatti.
