Chhattisgarh Women\u2019s Commission chief Kiranmayi Nayak has triggered a fresh controversy by blaming girls for filing rape cases after living in a consensual relationship. She had said on Friday that most girls file FIR for rape after the break-up. Her remarks triggered a controversy over the hot take that risks discouraging survivors in a country where a vast number of rapes are believed to go unreported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking about harassment of women, she said If a married man lures a girl into an affair, she must understand whether the man is lying to them and whether he will help them survive or not. If that is not the case, both of them, mostly the women, approach the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Answering a question in a public meeting at Bilaspur on Friday, she said, in most cases, girls have a consensual relationship, a live-in setup and then file an FIR for rape after the break-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Convincing to the public, Nayak said if the couples are a minor then do not fall into the trap of filmy romance. An individual\u2019s family, friends, and entire life can get destroyed after a few years, when the couple has kids, they find it difficult to survive. These days, there is a new trend that people prefer to get married at the age of 18, she added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rights group claims that the government statistics underestimate the number of rapes as it is still considered a taboo to report rape cases in some parts of India that resulted in murder. Crimes against women are often taken less seriously in India and the police investigated the cases with a lack of proper attention and sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest National Crime Records Bureau data shows that India recorded an average of 87 rape cases every day in 2019 and more than 4 lakh cases of crimes against women during the year, a rise of over 7 percent from 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
