The coronavirus crisis will not be the last pandemic and attempts to improve human health are doomed unless climate change and animal welfare are tackled, said World Health Organisation Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday.

The history says that the ongoing crisis will not be the last pandemic, and epidemics are a fact of life. The world has operated on a cycle of panic and neglect for too long, said director-general in a video message marking Sunday’s first International Day of Epidemic Preparedness.

Condemning the dangerously short-sighted measures of using cash at outbreaks, he said we throw money at an outbreak, and when it is over, we forget about it, but do nothing to prepare for the next one.It was time to learn the lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The planet was woefully unprepared for the potentially devastating pandemics, according to the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board’s first annual report of September 2019, on world readiness for health emergencies which was published a few months before the Covid-19 outbreak.

Tedros said any efforts to better human health are doomed, if the critical interface between human and animals, and the existential threat of climate change are not addressed immediately. As the pandemic has highlighted the intimate links between human health, animals and planet, he added.

The coronavirus has killed over 1.75 million people and about 80 million cases have been registered since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to sources. The world has been turned upside-down in the past year. The consequences of the outbreak go far beyond the disease itself, with profound impact on societies and economies, said Tedros.

Further he urged all the countries to invest in areas of preparedness to detect, prevent and mitigate the emergencies of all kinds, including upliftment of public health institutions. Doing this will ensure that coming generations inherit a safer, more resilient and more sustainable world, he said.
