Micro-blogging platform Twitter, which was ordered by the government to block 1,178 accounts for spreading misinformation on farmers’ protest, informed it has withheld these accounts within India only. The company added it has not taken any action on accounts of journalists, media, activists and politicians as it violates the right to freedom of expression under Indian law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social media giant wrote a blog updating about the entire issue. Twitter wrote transparency is the foundation for promoting healthy public conversation. The company said following the reports of violence in recent weeks, it is sharing a granular update on \u00a0its proactive efforts to enforce our rules and defend our principles in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company said, it has received several several separate blocking orders by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. it said it temporarily compiled with the emergency blocking orders but restored access later in the manner it thought was consistent with Indian law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company said it was served with non-compliance notice after it reported the development and in a bid to set the record straight shared a list of actions taken by it as a result of these blocking orders. The company said it will continue \u00a0advocate for the right of free expression on behalf of the people it serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Centre has sent a fresh list of 1200 accounts to Twitter asking it to either suspend or block them in India. In the notice, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said these accounts were flagged by security agencies as accounts of Khalistan sympathisers or backed by Pakistan. An official said, Twitter was free to approach court and get a stay order, but till the time it will have to block the accounts in view of the notice. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
