Ahead of the state assembly election, the Assam government on Friday said it has cut the rates of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and the duty on liquor has been reduced by 25%, which will be effective from Friday midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While presenting a vote-in-account for six months, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma notified about the new rates in the state Assembly on Friday. He told that the move will result in losses of nearly Rs 80 crore per month. The government has removed the additional cess of Rs 5 which it levied on the fuels last year at the peak of Covid-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the Covid-19 situation improving, and the additional burden on the health sector reducing, the state Cabinet has decided to withdraw the additional taxes on these fuels, the new rates will be effective from Friday midnight, said Sarma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement comes as fuel prices are on a steady rise across the country. As a result, Assam will have the record of having the least costly petrol prices in the country after Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, claimed the state finance minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the present, the price of petrol in Assam is Rs 90.41 per litre, after reduction the cost will come down to Rs 85.41 per litre. The diesel price, on the other hand, will be reduced from Rs 84.29 per litre to Rs 79.29 per litre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assam will have the lowest rates after states like Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, who have diesel prices of Rs 77.89 per litre and Rs 79.07 per litre respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
