The BJP’s plans to tick another south Indian destination is likely to be decided on Monday as the new Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan announced on Thursday that the floor test in the union territory’s assembly will be held on February 22 (Monday next).

The BJP has put a big question mark on the future of the Congress government of V. Narayanasamy with elections barely three months away. Puducherry is due to go to polls along with West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. But with the extra charge given to Soundarajan, the BJP looks set to be happy by just dislodging Narayanasamy’s government and bringing in President’s rule.

The removal of Kiran Bedi and the choice of Soundararajan as her successor given her experience as the Tamil NaduBJP chief, points to the possibility. Soundararajan is said to have met Narayanasamyand asked him to prove majority on Monday. With the BJP in the union territory maintaining that the Congress government had become a minority government, the Lieutenant Governor is said to have underlined the requirement for a floor test given the resignation of 4 Congress MLAs.

In the 30-member Puducherry Assembly(and 3 nominated members), the Congress had just cleared the majority mark withits 15 MLAs, the DMK’s 3 and an independent. With the resignation of the 4MLAs, both the opposition and the government, Congress 10 MLAs, DMK 3 and independent 1, are at 14.
