Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami on Friday promised to withdraw all the cases filed against Covid-19 lockdown violators and anti-CAA protesters. He made the announcement at a rally in Thenkasi ahead of upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 10 lakh cases are expected to be withdrawn. Over 10 lakh cases were registered by the police under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act and Epidemic Diseases Act against the violators since the Central government declared the nationwide lockdown on March 25, 2020. Another 1,500 cases were filed against anti-CAA protesters in Tamil Nadu. Most of these cases are being closed by the authorities in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing a rally, Palaniswami said the state police registered several cases against those who violated the lockdown rules, spread rumours and false messages. Except for the cases which were registered for involving in the particular crimes, illegally obtaining e-pass and preventing the police from doing their duty, all other cases will be dropped considering the welfare of the people.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Minister also said that the government had also dropped the cases which were registered against the people who were involved in the anti-CAA protests in the state. He said that the people of some organisations conducted rallies, burnt effigies and copies of the CAA which was introduced and passed in the parliament in 2019. Opposing this Act, the. The Tamil Nadu police registered about 1500 cases against the protesters. Now the government has decided to drop all other cases except the ones that were registered for involving in the particular crimes and preventing the police from doing their duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from these two big announcements, Palaniswami also assured that his government will consider withdrawal of the cases that were registered against the people who protested against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two warring factions in AIADMK – of Deputy CM O Pannerselvam and CM E Palaniswamy, reconciled after the party named incumbent E Palaniswamy as its CM candidate and O Panneerselvam as the chief of the 11-member steering committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
