The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued summon to the state Director General of Police over a complaint of custodial torture of BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The commission has told the DGP to appear before it on April 6.

Lawyer Aditya Mishra had lodged a complaint at NHRC in 2018 immediately after Pragya Singh Thakur alleged in a TV interview that she was tortured by the Anti-Terrorism Squad of the state police. Later, the NHRC transferred the petition to MHRC for further proceedings.

Now, MHRC has summoned the DGP of Maharashtra. The plea said that the commission should take notice of Thakur’s allegations as this is a matter of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution which protects the right to life and personal liberty.

Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, had earlier sought an exemption from daily appearance in court on the grounds of health and security.
