[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Says Muslim women performed their duty by voting in BJP, it is now PM’s turn

Installation of the new BJP government in UP with a huge majority has generated a lot of enthusiasm as well as expectation among the voters. A Muslim woman, Atiya Sabri, who is a victim of the infamous triple talaq practice, has sought the help of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in resolving the issue. Sabri hails from Saharanpur in UP, which has an over 40 percent Muslim population—the largest in the state.

Speaking to APN on March 20, Sabri said, “The Muslim women have performed their duty by voting for the BJP in the assembly elections. It is now the turn of Prime Minister Modi to rid us of the unjust practice of triple talaq and those issuing fatwa in support of this evil custom.” Sabri has demanded a ban on such fatwas.

Sabri got married in March 2012 to Wajid Ali, a resident of Sultanpur. After a year, she delivered a baby girl. Later, she gave birth to another female child. This led Ali to pronounce triple talaq in one sitting to Sabri without her consent.

Sabri says she failed to get justice from the court thanks to Muslim personal law provisions on the matter. Meanwhile, Ali approached Darul Uloom Deoband and succeeded in getting a fatwa authenticating the divorce.

Sabri has been regularly raising her voice against such frivolous fatwas. In January this year, she has filed a petition at the Supreme Court against Darul Uloom Deoband and the ministries of law, minority affairs and women and child development. The apex court is scheduled to hear the petition on March 30.

“If consent of both parties is necessary at the time of wedding, it should also be mandatory for separation. Darul Uloom Deoband should not confirm talaq without conducting proper investigation. Thousands of women are victims of this evil practice,” Sabri told APN.

Reacting to the ongoing legal battle, Maulana Nadeemul Wajdi, a Saharanpur-based cleric, says the government should not interfere in religious issues. He called for brainstorming sessions among religious leaders to resolve the issue.

Mufti Arshad Farooqi, another local religious figure, believes that triple talaq is not only illogical but also against Islam. “The Muslim Personal Law Board has been campaigning against the misuse of triple talaq. It is against the human rights of women,” he said. However, he said he is against the government’s intervention in religious matters.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
