The NITI Aayog member Dr V.K. Paul on Thursday said the Centre is very worried about the upsurge in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra. It also said that the virus cannot be taken for granted if the country has to remain Covid-free. Dr Paul said they learned that there is a strict lockdown being imposed in Nagpur. So, the government is reaching a situation where those approaches are being brought back, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government is very worried about Maharashtra. This is a serious matter. This has two lessons – don’t take the virus for granted, and if the country has to remain Covid-free, then, it needs to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The comments come a day after the Uddhav Thackeray government announced a week-long lockdown from March 15 to March 21 in Nagpur, which reported over 1800 cases in 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Union Health Ministry today said that eight of the ten cities with the highest number of cases belong to Maharashtra. These cities include Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Amravati, Jalgaon, Nashik, Aurangabad and Pune. Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in the country and has 60 percent of the country’s single-day total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
