UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson on Wednesday said India has declined their assistance of its integrated supply chain for Covid-19-related material, saying it has a robust system to deal with the required logistics.

Deputy spokesperson for the UN Chief, Farhan Haq, told that the United Nations has offered the assistance, but at this point of time, India has said that it is not needed because it has a reasonably robust system to deal with raging second wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

He further said that their offer stands and they are willing to help in whatever way they can. So far, no shipments of essential material from UN agencies have been sought by India, said the spokesperson adding that they are in touch with their counterparts in India to see whether operational and logistical help is needed.

Further, Haq informed that Chef de Cabinet to the United Nations Secretary-General Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti has been in touch with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN T.S. Tirumurti over the Covid-19 situation in India. The UN is also making sure that its own staff, whether international or national, in India are taken care of so that they don’t place a burden on the healthcare system of India, he added.

Earlier, Haq was quoted saying that UN colleagues on the ground continue supporting authorities and communities to tackle the impacts of the pandemic in India. The UN entities have been training health workers, including 10,000 nurses through UN Women initiatives and the UN team has also partnered with employers’ and workers’ organisations to promote jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities. We are also focusing on getting jobs for 10 million young people, Haq said, adding that over 13,000 women and youth, including returnee migrants, are being trained through entrepreneurship programmes led by UN Women and ILO.

President of the UN General Assembly also expressed concern over the grappling situation in India, saying that it is time for the world to extend help and support to the country, which had supplied crucial Covid-19 vaccines to vulnerable nations.
