The Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir has been cancelled for the second consecutive year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will be symbolic only.  Earlier, in view of the evolving Covid-19 situation, the registration for Amarnath Yatra was temporarily suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted Amarnath Yatra cancelled in wake of Covid-19 Pandemic. Decision after threadbare discussion with Shri Amarnath Shrine Board members. Yatra to be symbolic only. However, all the traditional religious rituals shall be performed at the Holy Cave Shrine as per past practice. He said It is important to save people\u2019s lives. So, it is not advisable to hold and conduct this year\u2019s pilgrimage in the larger public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An official spokesman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board said a discussion was held with the members on the present Covid-19 situation before arriving on the decision. He said that the Lt Governor, who is also Chairman of Amarnath Shrine Board subsequently held a detailed deliberation with Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta and other members of the shrine and directed that devotees should be enabled to attend to morning and evening Aarti in online mode. He said it would help them to pay their obeisance while also avoiding and travel and exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 56-day yatra to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of Himalayas, is scheduled to start from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal on June 28 and culminate on August 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual pilgrimage to Amarnath shrine was discussed at Home Minister Amit Shah’s high level meeting on Kashmir on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the Indian Army had stated that it was ready for the Amarnath Yatra and has taken all necessary steps for it even as the decision to conduct the annual pilgrimage to the cave shrine lies with the civil administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 22, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), which organises the annual yatra, announced to temporarily suspend the registration of pilgrims for the pilgrimage. The board had started registration of pilgrims online from April 15 for the Baltal and the Pahalgam routes, which lead to the cave shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, however, the Uttarakhand government decided to call off the Char Dham Yatra to the four famous Himalayan shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and the Yamunotri in view of the COVID-19 situation.
