Rajinikanth, who disappointed several fans in 2020 by announcing he would stay away from politics, on Monday reignited the political potboiler in Tamil Nadu by saying he would reconsider his decision.

It was in 2017, Rajinikanth announced that he would be entering politics. Since then, he had held several rounds of meetings with RMM functionaries and often expressed his views on political developments and other issues surrounding Tamil Nadu.

On 3 December, 2020, Rajinikanth said he would launch his party in January 2021 ahead of the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. In a U-turn, Rajinikanth had on December 29, 2020, announced that he would not join the politics citing factors like his health condition. Since then, several RMM functionaries have left RMM and joined other political parties.

The speculations that RMM would have impacted the outcome of the Tamil Nadu polls were rounding but after Rajinikanth dropped his political plans, some in the BJP had favoured reaching out to him for his support.
