Close to securing its maiden Olympic medal, the Indian women\u2019s hockey team lost the bronze medal match to Great Britain by 3-4 at the ongoing Games in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second quarter, India was trailing 0-2 but the double strike from Gurjit Kaur helped them come back in the contest. Then scores by Vandana Katariya took India to a 3-2 lead at the halfway stage. However, Great Britain equalised in the third quarter, and scored again early in the final 15 minutes, to turn around the bronze medal clash in their favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The heartbreak came a day after the Indian men\u2019s hockey team defeated Germany and clinched the bronze medal after 41 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing the efforts of the women\u2019s hockey team at the Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that it narrowly missed a medal but it reflects the spirit of new India, where we give our best and scale new frontiers. The success at #Tokyo2020 will motivate young daughters of India to take up Hockey and excel in it, Proud of this team, he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
