On September 19, 2008, the horrifying encounter incident took place between Indian Mujahideen operatives at Batla House and the Delhi police’s Special Cell. The encounter took place in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar just days after a serial blast in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The serial blast killed as many as 26 people and 133 were injured. Five bombs had exploded at Karol Bagh, Greater Kailash, Connaught Place, and India Gate on September 13, 2008. The Indian Mujahideen took responsibility for the blasts. Later, the police under the supervision of Mohan Chand Sharma received information about the suspects at a flat in Batla House. The police team conducted the raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A massive gunfight between the police and the Indian Mujahideen took place in which Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma and Head Constable Balwant Singh sustained severe injuries. The IM operatives, Mohd Atif Ameen and Mohd Sajid, who got injured in the gunfight, were declared brought dead at AIIMS hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 44-year-old inspector suffered three bullets and later, he succumbed to his injuries. He was awarded the gallantry medal, Ashok Chakra, posthumously in 2009. This was the inspector’s seventh gallantry medal. He was earlier awarded the president’s medal seven times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in the Chaukhutia Masi region of Almora in Uttarakhand, Mohan Chand Sharma served the Delhi Police for 19 years. He was in the Delhi Police special cell unit, an anti-terrorist unit of the Delhi police force. In 1989, he was appointed as a sub-inspector in Delhi Police. His hard work and dedication served him with an out-of-turn promotion and he became an inspector in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharma was an epitome of bravery and was involved in prominent terrorist encounters. In 2006, he was a part of an encounter with the terrorist Abu Hamza at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
