The father of the nation, Mohanchand Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, and due to this occasion, there is a national holiday to observe the day. This day is also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Now that you know about the importance of the day, have you ever wondered that MK Gandhi was always called by the name Mahatma Gandhi? If yes, then we have the answers. He was earlier known by the name MK Gandhi, but some incidences that happened in his life, made people call him Mahatma and thus after that, he was known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu.

The first incident took place in 1893 when MK Gandhi was travelling by train from Durban to Pretoria at night, and it was just a week before he arrived in South Africa. When he was on the train, a man entered the first-class compartment and by seeing Gandhi, he ordered that he should get out of the first-class and go to the luggage compartment. However, when Gandhi raised his voice as he too had a ticket for the first-class compartment, he was thrown out of the train, this was the incident that made him realise how racism can do brutal things to a person.
