Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday virtually attended the 28th foundation day of the National Human Rights Commission. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra have also attended the event.

Addressing the event virtually, PM Modi expressed concern about selective outrage over human rights and said looking at human rights from a political lens is dangerous for democracy. His statement was in the backdrop of Congress’ outrage in Lakhimpur Kheri violence which took away 9 lives on October 3.

In his speech, PM Modi said a selective approach towards human rights dents the country’s image. Human rights are grossly violated when the people are viewed with a political color, viewed through a political lens, weighed with the scales of political profit and loss, PM Modi said.

Speaking at the 28th foundation day of NHRC, PM Modi lauded his government’s ‘sabka aath, sabka vikas’ campaign saying that it reflects the basic principle of human rights for all.

Former Supreme Court judge Arun Mishra, who were also present in the event with Home Minister Amit Shah, lavished praise for starting a new era in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his speech, PM Modi listed out his government’s measure to deliver basic needs like toilets, cooking gas, electricity and homes to the poor and said this give rise to their aspirations and make them more aware of their rights. By implementing triple talaq law, his government has bestowed new rights on Muslim women, PM Modi claimed.

The PM’s comments also came amid national fury over the killing of 4 farmers in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri earlier this month. All four were taking part in a peaceful protest when they were run over by a car allegedly driven by Union Home Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra.

The opposition has been slamming the BJP saying that the Minister’s son’s act in Lakhimpur Kheri is an abuse of even basic human rights including the right to protest safely and the right to justice.
