For the last few years, the B.A. (Honours) Political Science programme has emerged as the top choice for students seeking admission in undergraduate programmes at Delhi University.

This high demand bachelor programme reflects as the high cut-offs across colleges and seats being filled to capacity early as the admissions for unreserved seats in the programme have been closed in 13 DU colleges.

The first cut-off of both Hindu and Ramjas College of Delhi University was 100% this year while 10 colleges of Delhi University had the first cut-off of 99% or above. The cut-off of Lady Shri Ram College for Women was 100% last year which was also the highest first cut-off in 2019 at Hindu College.

The fruitful changes in syllabus, pattern and course curriculum in the last few years are the top reason behind the programme’s popularity among the students.

Hena Singh, a political science department teacher at Miranda House which had its highest first cut-off of 99.75%, told the Indian Express that the introduction of applied papers of contemporary relevance and restructuring in the pattern of UPSC examinations a few years ago have contributed to this surge in popularity.

Tanvir Aeijaz, another teacher in the Political Science department at Ramjas College suggested that the course is also a top choice for students who want to study law after completing their graduation. He also suggested that there has been the introduction of a lot of applied papers such as public policy, international relations, as well as optional papers such as Public Opinion and Survey Research which helps in political research, which is in demand.

Even an interdisciplinary area like feminism is an important part of the DU Political Science programme. With liberalization, globalization and market expansion, there are so many choices for students to explore with this background.

The students consider the course easier than other popular B.A. (Honours) programmes such as Economics which involves mathematics both as a qualification and as an important part of the programme, and English.
