{"id":19668,"date":"2017-06-20T17:24:47","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T11:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apnlive.com\/?p=19668"},"modified":"2017-06-20T17:24:54","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T11:54:54","slug":"farmers-not-committing-suicides-upendra-tiwari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apnlive.com\/politics\/farmers-not-committing-suicides-upendra-tiwari\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers not committing suicides: Upendra Tiwari"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em>Under fire in talk show, UP minister makes careless remark on agrarian crisis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once again, a politician has come out with an irresponsible statement on an important issue, and this time it is on the agrarian crisis afflicting the country.<\/p>\n<p>Upendra Tiwari, minister of state (independent charge) in the UP government, uttered the words, \u201c<em>kisaan atmyahatya nahi kar raha hai <\/em>(farmers are not committing suicides)\u201d, while talking on the daily debate show, <em>Mudda<\/em>, on <em>APN<\/em> channel.<\/p>\n<p>The panel was discussing the fiscal burden on states as a result of farm loan waivers.<\/p>\n<p>Tiwari was waxing eloquent about the BJP government\u2019s pro-farmer approach at the centre and the state and how Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath had evolved policies like crop insurance scheme to benefit the farmer.<\/p>\n<p>He also contended that despite the loan waiver of Rs 36,000 crore that the UP government had announced, the state finances will not suffer, the banks will not face any burden and ordinary citizens will not be taxed, because the state government is also working proactively to curb corruption, and the money saved through anti-corruption measures will ensure that there is no additional burden on the government or the common man when loan waiver is implemented.<\/p>\n<p>But Congress leader Sarwat Jahan Fatima was quick to remind him that Madhya Pradesh has had a BJP government for the last 15 years, and asked him, in that case, whom will they hold responsible for farmers\u2019 plight and the death of farmers in that state?<\/p>\n<p>And the show host, Himanshu Dixit, persisted in asking, why, despite all the claims that the BJP is doing so much for farmers, farmer suicides are happening.<\/p>\n<p>Tiwari\u2019s response to this was that no suicides are happening.<\/p>\n<p>Expectedly, his careless remark upset other panelists.
