Unsurprisingly, many of the tsunami-affected nations are islands, that have more susceptible coastlines than landlocked ones. These nations are located in the Pacific Ocean&#8217;s &#8220;Ring of Fire,&#8221; a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The tsunami, which killed over 15,000 people, was caused by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake.<br><\/li><li><strong>United States<br><\/strong>The exposed coastlines of the United States&#8217; West Coast are the most tsunami-prone region in the country. Tsunamis even as far away as Russia and South America have wreaked havoc on the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. Meanwhile, Alaska is located in one of the world&#8217;s most hazardous seismic zones, and this was the location of the greatest tsunami ever recorded, with waves surpassing 1,722 feet.<br><\/li><li><strong>Indonesia<\/strong><br>In 2004, a disastrous tsunami triggered by a major earthquake caused catastrophic losses in Indonesia. Over 200,000 people were killed, and the monetary damages topped $10 billion.<br><\/li><li><strong>Greece<\/strong><br>Greece is a great target for tsunamis due to its closeness to the ocean, volcanoes, islands, and a fractured and shallow seabed. Greece is additionally vulnerable because of\u00a0the frequency at which earthquakes occur in North Africa\u2014a 2004 Algerian earthquake struck the southern coast of Greece and the island of Crete.<br><\/li><li><strong>Chile<\/strong><br>Coastal earthquakes have indeed been responsible for some of Chile&#8217;s most deadly earthquakes. An earthquake of magnitude 8.5 hit the coast in 1960, causing a tsunami.
