The Editors Guild of India on Sunday condemned the Tripura Police’s action against journalists reporting on Tripur communal violence. The statement comes a day after Tripura Police invoked the UAPA against 102 social media handles over clashes and alleged attacks on mosques.

Earlier before this, the police had charged UAPA against some Delhi based lawyers who had visited Tripura as part of an independent fact finding enquiry commission into the communal violence.

Journalist Shyam Meera Singh was one of them who has been been booked under UAPA for merely tweeting Tripura is burning. The FIR which names 102 accounts also includes journalists Aarif Shah and C.J. Werleman.

Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and IPC sections of 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups), 153B, 469, 471, 503 (Criminal intimidation), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 120B (Criminal conspiracy) have been invoked in the FIR.

In a press statement, the Editors Guild of India said it was shocked by the action initiated against people who were reporting and writing on the recent communal violence in the state.

This is an extremely disturbing trend where such a harsh law, where in the processes of investigation and bail applications are extremely rigorous and overbearing, is being used for merely reporting on communal violence, the Editors Guild said.

The EGI also said the government cannot use such stringent laws to suppress reporting on communal violence incidents.

Tripura Police has also written to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube seeking details of the accounts named in the FIR. The police required details includes user registration details, browsing log details from the date of registration to the present, list of IP addresses of systems from where these users logged in and mobile numbers linked to the accounts, including verified mobile numbers added for security purposes.

Earlier this month, Tripura Police had invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against two lawyers who had alleged Muslims were targeted in last month’s violence and also named fringe outfits Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), and Bajrang Dal as the perpetrators
