Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, one of India\u2019s eminent social reformers and thinkers of the 19th century was the first to launch the first school for girls from the lower strata of the society. Jyotiba Phule is also known for his anti-caste movement and promoting education for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born on April 11, 1827, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule breathed his last on November 28, 1890, in Maharashtra. Maharashtrian social activist Vithalrao Krishnaji Vandekar gave him the title of Mahatma on May 11, 1888.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1848, Mahatma Phule formed Satyashodhak Samaj to work towards the social and economic benefits of lower castes in Maharashtra. Working for the people of society, Mahatma Phule, soon realized that education is the only solution for empowerment and uplifting of the women and the opposed sections of the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mahatma Phule was the first to coin the word ‘Dalit’ for the opposed lower caste people of India. Satyashodhak Samaj worked for demanding equal rights for people from lower castes. People from all religions and castes were a part of this association which worked for the upliftment of the oppressed classes. Phule is regarded as an important figure in the social reform movement in Maharashtra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his younger days, Phule was very influenced by Thomas Paine’s book titled The Rights of Man, which made him believe that the only solution to combat the social evils, was to education of women and suppress sections of society. In 1848 he taught his wife how to read and write and later the couple went on to open first-ever schools only for girls in Pune. The school welcomed the girls from lower sections of society to come and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phule along with a social reformer was also a merchant, author and municipal council member. In 1863, he used to supply metal casting equipment to constructions sites and in 1883, he was appointed as the commissioner of the Poona municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
