The Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, on Tuesday, submitted papers in Lok Sabha in which he mentioned the data that over six lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rai said that according to the information available with the ministry of external affairs, a total number of 1,33,83,718 Indian nationals are currently living in other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Parliament session, he gave reply to a question and said that 1,33,049 Indian gave up their citizenship in 2017, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,248 in 2020 and 1,11,287 till September 30, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data indicates that the highest number of people gave up their citizenship in 2019 and the lowest was in 2020. Well, the lowest rate can be because of the pandemic as there was a nationwide lockdown. Soon after, when the country resumed its services, in just nine months almost about 85,000 people gave up their citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, a person who is of Indian origin cannot have citizenship in two countries. So, when they get the passport from some other country, they are required to surrender their Indian passport immediately after they get the passport from some other country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, around 40 per cent of the citizenship renunciation requests come from the United States, followed by Australia and Canada, which amount to a chunk of around 30% of such requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
