International Volunteer Day (IVD), also known as International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, is observed every year on December 5th across the world. It is an annual international commemoration established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It allows volunteer-involved organisations and individual volunteers to promote volunteerism, persuade governments to fund volunteer initiatives, and acknowledge volunteer contributions to the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local, national, and international levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Volunteer Day Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Volunteer Day has been strategically used over the years, with many countries emphasising volunteers’ contributions to the Millennium Development Goals, a set of time-bound targets aimed at combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and gender discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations system, countries, volunteer-involving organisations, and devoted people collaborate to organise International Volunteer Day. Representatives from the media or academics, foundations, the private sector, religious groups, and sports and recreational organisations are often involved too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Volunteer Day History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 17, 1985, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A\/RES\/40\/212, establishing the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development.
