On December 5, 1992, Hindu Kar Sevaks demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, which had been standing for over 30 years. Over 2,000 people were killed in the tragic destruction, which sparked countrywide communal riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident is tagged as the blackest day of India after the country got independence from the Britishers in 1947.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The masjid was demolished by karsevaks who had come together as part of a movement by the Bhartiya Janta Party and Hindu outfits for the construction of Lord Ram temple at the most disputed site, Ayodhya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All about Babri Masjid demolition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Babri Masjid was constructed by Mughal emperor Babur’s general Mis Baqi in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. According to Hindus, the mosque was built on the foundations of Lord Ram temple that commemorated the birthplace of Lord Ram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 1949, Lord Ram idols were placed inside the masjid resulting in widespread protests from both Hindus and Muslims. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad formed a group and started the Ram Janmabhoomi movie wherein BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani was made the leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1989, then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi allowed the Parishad to conduct a ceremony, Shilanyas. Meanwhile, LK Advani conducted a rath yatra across the country to garner support from the people to build a Ram Temple at Ayodhya. On October 30, 1990, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was the chief minister of UP, ordered police firing at the Hindutva mob who were marching towards Babri Masjid. The incident killed 16 karsevaks, as per reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1992, karsevaks demolished the Babri Masjid and they put a makeshift temple in the disputed area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the demolition of the Babri Masjid, on the evening of December 6, 1992, karsevaks started attacking Muslim residents of Ayodhya and demolishing their houses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighteen Muslims were killed and their houses and shops were destroyed, including 23 local mosques. Moreover, communal riots broke out in different parts of the country, including Mumbai, and around 2,000 people were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
