Carlos Almeida, the two-time BJP MLA from Vasco da Gama assembly constituency of South Goa, has joined Congress along with his supporters on Wednesday.

The MLA had submitted his resignation yesterday to Secretary of the Assembly, Namrata Ulman. However, his resignation is yet to beget a final nod.

Almeida, a two-term MLA who has held the Vasco seat since 2012, claimed he was being sidelined by the BJP. He also said that the BJP had lost its direction in Goa after former BJP Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s demise.

After Almeida’s resignation, the BJP’s strength has down to 24 in the 40-seat Assembly. Before Almeida, Luisinho Falerio, Ravi Naik, Alexo Reginaldo Lorenko (all from Congress), Jayesh Salgaonkar (Goa Forward Party), Rohan Khunte (Independent) and Alina Saldanha (BJP) resigned from the 40-member House.

The MLA said he had been asked to work in the assembly constituency led by Daji Salkar, against whom he had filed a fraud case.

Almeida, the second BJP MLA to resign after Alina Saldanha from Mormugao taluka, had accused BJP of systematically finishing Manohar Parrikar’s loyalists.

The MLA had earlier urged the BJP’s top brass to continue Parrikar’s policy of giving adequate representation to minorities, urging the allotment of 35% seats to Catholic candidates. Parrikar’s policy of awarding tickets to minorities had stood the BJP in good stead in the 2012 and 2017 Assembly elections, he had said.
