In the wake of rising Covid-19 cases in the national capital, the authorities have instructed the shops at the Sarojini Nagar market to operate on an odd-even basis on December 25 and 26. This move came into effect after detecting overcrowding in the market.

The Delhi government has come up with this measure in order to prevent the popular South Delhi market from becoming a super-spreader of the highly contagious virus. Under the system, odd-numbered shops will open on Saturday and even-numbered shops on Sunday, said Kuldeep Singh Sawhney, President, Sarojini Market Shopkeepers Association.

The decision, however, was criticised by the market association, which stated that it will not obey the order because it was issued without consulting traders.

After seeing overcrowding in the Sarojini market, the Delhi government directed the order to open shops on an odd-even basis. The Delhi High Court stated that whether there is Covid or not, overcrowding is a concern.

According to an order issued by the New Delhi district administration, it said that increasing footfalls are seen in the Sarojini Nagar market during the last few days. Therefore, with the need to control the same in light of the rapid spike in daily cases and positivity, it was decided unanimously by all market trade associations on Friday to follow odd-even operations for a weekend of December 25 and 26.

On Friday, all Sarojini Nagar Market stakeholders gathered for a meeting. The committee decided that the Director (Enforcement) of the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Station House Officer, Sarojini Market, would ensure that no unregistered vendors operate in the market and that there are no infringements. They must also verify that only gates 1, 3, and 5 are used for entering the market and that gates 2, 2A, and 4 are being used for exiting.

Shop owners will not be permitted to encroach on the public path or to permit unlawful use of the space in front of their shops. Violations of these rules will result in the shop being sealed and an FIR will be filed against the owner by the NDMC.
