Novak Djokovic, the 20 times Grand Slam winner has been the talk of the town for his participation in the Australian Open 2022. The Australian government is not allowing Djokovic a visa to play the Australian Open this year and he is being held at the immigration detention in Australia for two days.

The reason behind all this controversy is that Djokovic is not revealing his vaccination status to the authority, whereas the Australian government are strict to the person who is shy to reveal their vaccination status.

Earlier, it was said that the Serb will be granted an exemption to participate in the Australian Open 2021, but his action of speaking against mandatory vaccines have been heavily criticized in Australia and it led to his visa being revoked. In Australia, more than 90% of the population are double vaccinated.

As per the law, these exemptions are only available for Australian visitors, not for any foreign nationals. Djokovic had received permission to enter Victoria from the state government, however, it doesn’t have any authority to issue visas to international visitors.

On the other hand, his fellow Rafael Nadal also broke his silence on the ongoing controversy and said the world has been suffering enough to not follow the rules. When asked about his opinion on Djokovic’s situation, Nadal said that the only thing for him is clear is that vaccinations are the priority and only vaccinated people are allowed to play in the Australia Open 2022.

Djokovic is currently the defending champion of the Australia Open and if he manages to participate and win this tournament then he will become the first-ever male player to win more than 20 Grand Slam titles, leaving behind Swiss great Roger Federer and the clay-court legend Rafael Nadal. As of now, Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer are all tied at 20 Grand Slam titles each.
