Noted Bengali theatre artist Saoli Mitra passed away at her residence in South Kolkata on Sunday, January 16 due to heart-related issues. She was 73. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saoli was the daughter of legendary actors Tripti Mitra and Sombhu Mitra. As per reports, the deceased actor’s last wish was to be cremated quietly at the Siriti crematorium. The reports also said that she was suffering from cardiac issues, however, she refused to be admitted to the hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The artist was honoured by Padma Shri in 2009, Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2003, and Banga Bibhusan in 2012. Her notable works include Ritwik Ghatak’s avant-grande film Jukti Takko Aar Gappo, Hajabaralo, Chandali, Pagla Ghorha, Galileo R Jeeban, Jodi Aar ek Baar, Lankadahan, to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She gained wide recognition after her solo performance as Draupadi in Naathvati Anaathbat. The play was written and directed by her. She further played the role of Sita on Sitakatha that was applauded by the critics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saoli Mitra went on to establish a theatre group Pancham Baidik which released widely acclaimed plays on women’s emancipation. Besides her theatre career, Saoli had also penned two books Five Lords, Yer None a Protector & Words Sweet & Timeless and Gononatya, Nobonatya, Sotnatya O Sombhu Mitra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
