The Election Commission of India on Sunday has issued a notice to Uttarakhand BJP for tweeting a morphed photo of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the morphed picture used by the BJP, Harish Rawat has been shown as a Muslim cleric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The EC released a notice and said that the Commission has carefully considered the matter and the BJP Uttarakhand has in violation of the clauses (I) and (II) laid down in the part General Conduct of the Model Code of Conduct, of Section-123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and sub-section (I)(a) of Section 153(A) of the Indian Penal Code 1860, made statements that are provocative and can seriously incite the emotions and lead to the breakdown of law & order situation thereby adversely affecting the election process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Commission also gave an opportunity to the BJP Uttarakhand and asked the party to explain its stand for using a morphed picture of Harish Rawat on its official Twitter handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday, the Uttarakhand Congress complained to the Commission alleging that the official Twitter handle of BJP Uttarakhand had tweeted a morphed image of the former CM wherein he was shown as someone belonging to a different community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following this, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala spoke to the CEC and demanded an FIR against the BJP for violating the model code and trying to create disharmony on religious grounds. Other Congress leaders including Ganesh Godiyal, Devendra Yadav, and others demanded the tweet to be taken down immediately and also demanded the suspension of the Twitter handle of BJP Uttarakhand till the Assembly Elections in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Uttarakhand Assembly Elections 2022 are slated for February 14 and will be contested to elect 70 members of the State Legislative Assembly. The results of the assembly polls will be announced on March 10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
