Two days after the controversial remark against the citizens of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, an FIR has been lodged by the BJP youth wing against Punjab’s Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Manish Kumar Singh, National Vice-President of the BJP Yuva Morcha, filed a complaint at the Kadam Kuan Police Station against the Punjab CM.

Talking to the reporters, Manish said that the Punjab Chief Minister made a contentious remark about not allowing people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to enter the state. He further said that the Indian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to live anywhere in the country and by making this statement, the Punjab Chief Minister has insulted the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. We will continue to protest until Channi apologizes to us, he added.

Addressing a rally on Wednesday, Channi stirred a controversy with his statement asking people to not let the ‘bhaiyas’ of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar enter the state. However, he later clarified that his UP, Bihar ke bhaiya comment was being misconstructed and his remark was apparently aimed at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and not the migrants who work in Punjab.

Channi said that his statement is being distorted. All migrant workers who came to Punjab till date, have toiled and taken it on the path to development. We have only love for them, nobody can change it, he added.

On February 16, 2022, Charanjit Singh Channi, while addressing a roadshow, said, Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter-in-law of Punjab. Will not let the ‘Uttar Pradesh, Bihar de bhaiye’, who have come here to rule, enter the state, he added. At the time of his statement, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi could be seen standing, smiling, and applauding.

Soon after his statement surfaced in the media, both BJP and AAP slammed Channi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Congress is demeaning Sant Ravidas’ heritage by making such statements.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP’s leader, stated that it’s a national disgrace and we strongly oppose any statements directed against a specific person or group. Priyanka Gandhi also belongs to UP, so she is also a bhaiya, he added.

The elections for the 117-member Punjab Assembly will take place on February 20 and the result will be declared on March 10 along with the results of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur.
