Every year on March 21st, the world commemorates World Down Syndrome Day, often known as WDSD. The day was established to raise awareness of the fundamental rights of people with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United Nations commemorated the day for the first time in 2012. The date March 21 was chosen to mark this day because it represents the one-of-a-kind nature of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down Syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
‘We Decide’ has been chosen as the theme for the day this year. It was inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and it will focus on the right to participate for people living with Down Syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The concept behind this theme is to show that all it takes is for a human being to connect with another and that it is this connection that saves lives in the worst of circumstances. People and companies have been severely impacted since the coronavirus pandemic rocked the planet. However, in these challenging times, we must all remember to look after those with Down syndrome and make sure they are not left alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
