Food delivery services Zomato and Swiggy have hit headlines on Monday after a CCI probe was launched against the platforms for alleged unfair business practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per reports, the Competition Commission of India ordered the probe after the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) raised concerns over Zomato and Swiggy dealing with restaurant partners. Zomato stated that the CCI wants to investigate aspects like a preferential listing of restaurant partners and pricing parity. Deepinder Goyal, the CEO of Zomato said he will continue to work closely with the Honorable Commission to assist them with their investigation and explain to the regulator why all their practices are in compliance with competition laws and do not have any adverse effect on competition in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few weeks back, NRAI had requested the CCI to investigate the companies for breaching platform neutrality by providing priority to exclusive contractors. The body also accused Zomato of using consumer data to build could kitchens. NRAI also said that the food delivery companies had also offered their facilities to some brands for additional fees or rental commissions. As per reports, Swiggy earned profit from part of sales from private labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Monday, CCI said that the commission is of the view that prima facie a conflict of interest situation has arisen in the present case, both with regard to Swiggy as well as Zomato, because of the presence of commercial interest in the downstream market, which may come in the way of them acting as neutral platforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
