A UK court on Wednesday issued a formal order to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to face trial over the publication of secret files relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A British judge sent the Australian-born Assange’s case to interior minister Priti Patel who will decide whether the Wikileaks founder should be extradited to the United States over the release of confidential US documents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assange’s lawyers have four weeks to make submissions to Patel and can also seek to appeal to the High Court. His lawyer also told the court that the legal team had serious submissions to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The order comes after the UK Supreme Court last month refused Assange permission to appeal against a lower court\u2019s ruling that he could be extradited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The extradition order will be signed by Patel, after which Assange could be able to challenge the decision by the judicial review which involves a judge examining the legitimacy of a public body’s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In January, Assange appealed and later the two judges allowed him to apply to the country’s highest court on points of law of general public importance. But the court refused permission to appeal, saying the application didn’t raise an arguable point of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assange, who has been denied any wrongdoing many times, is facing 18 criminal charges in United States, including breaking a spying law, after WikiLeaks published thousands of secret US files in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assange has been in a southeast London jail since 2019, and before that was holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in the British capital for 7 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
