[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Environment minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Zakia Shah Nawaz Khan had said two countries should discuss sustainable solution for smog at SAARC

India, on Thursday, declined Pakistan’s request for talks at the SAARC summit for finding a “sustainable solution to the smog” that has hit North India and Pakistan’s Punjab, saying the regional grouping can only function in an atmosphere free from terrorism.

“We have always maintained that for the talks to go ahead there should be a conducive environment and atmosphere. And that environment has to be created which is free of terrorism and free of terrorists getting support from Pakistan,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in response to a query about Pakistan’s call for talks at a SAARC meet.

The response from New Delhi was over comments made by environment minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Zakia Shah Nawaz Khan. In an opinion piece for Pakistan’s Geo TV, Khan had said that India and Pakistan should collaborate in order to find a sustainable solution to the smog and added: “The only proper forum to do that, at the moment, is through the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).”

Justifying her call for a joint meet, Khan said, “The nature of this emergency is such that let’s say Pakistan effectively tackles smog and India is still struggling, we will, regardless of our efforts, still be affected by air pollution. Hence, it has to be a joint effort.”
