A judicial review board of Pakistan’s Punjab province on Wednesday rejected the government’s plea to detain Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed for three more months. The board – which had earlier agreed to extend the 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind’s detention for a month – has now ordered for the release of the terrorist who had been under house arrest since January.

Directing the Pakistan government to release Saeed, the board said, “The government is ordered to release JuD chief Hafiz Saeed if he is not wanted in any other case.”

With the fresh order from the court, Saeed would be free unless the Pakistan government files review petition against the Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT) co-founder in any other cases.

Stating that his client is innocent, Saeed’s lawyer AK Dogar told the media that “there is no evidence against him, the court cannot pronounce him guilty”.

Speaking to PTI, an official source said, “The government cannot afford to set Saeed free in the current circumstance. It cannot face international backlash in the event of releasing the JuD chief.”

Stating that the release of Saeed could lead to the imposition of international sanctions on Pakistan, an official of the Punjab Home Department told the review board, “We plead the board not to order the release of Saeed as Pakistan may face international sanctions.”

Earlier last month, after the Pakistan government sought the extension of Hafiz Saeed’s detention under public safety law – the Judicial Review Board extended the house arrest of the alleged Mumbai attack mastermind for another 30 days.

Hafiz Saeed and his four aides were detained by the Punjab government for 90 days, on January 31, under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. While the extension of detention for 30 more days was applicable on the Jamat-ud-Dawa chief from October 24, his four aides – Abdullah Ubaid, Malik Zafar Iqbal, Abdul Rehman Abid and Qazi Kashif Hussain – walked free after the expiry of their September 25 detention order.

The Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-ud-Dawa is allegedly the front of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which carried out the 2008 Mumbai terror attack – where 10 terrorist were responsible for the killing of 166 people in the country’s economic capital.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
