[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In a rare incident of committing suicide in the court room, former Bosnian Croat general Slobodan Praljak has died after swallowing poison as a judge at the International Court of Justice <\/a>at The Hague upheld his 20-year sentence for war crimes.<\/p>\n

The dramatic move of taking dose of poison by the accused, 72 year old Slobadan Pralijak was recorded live. He was seen tilting his head back and drink from a small glass bottle while the presiding judge read out the verdict.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AdQsDopZfS4″][vc_column_text]Before swallowing the poison the Bosnian Corat general shouted, “Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal. I am rejecting your verdict with contempt.”<\/p>\n

The court witnessed chaos while presiding judge presiding immediately suspended the court proceedings and asked to down the curtains. An ambulance was pressed into service while paramedics raced up to the courtroom.<\/p>\n

Croatia’s Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, later confirmed the death of the former general and offered his condolences. He posted a tweet saying, “On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and on my own behalf, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of General Slobodan Praljak.”<\/p>\n

Praljak, a former assistant defence minister of Croatia and Commander of the Croatian Defence Council, was appealing against a jail term of 20 years in prison. The nature of the poison ingested by Praljak was not known.<\/p>\n

During 1992-1995, Slobodan Praljak served as general in the Croatian army and the Coratian Defence Council, an army of the Coratian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia. In 2013, Praljak was found guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Yugoslav war by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugaslavia (ICTY).<\/p>\n

Praljik, indicted by and voluntarily surrendered to ICTY in 2004, was one of the six Bosnian Croat officials convicted for war crimes against Bosnian Muslim population during the Coart-Bosniak war.<\/p>\n

The war was conflict between the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the self-proclaimed Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia, supported by Croatia. The war, (October 1992 to February 1994), is also referred as \u201ca war within a war\u201d because it was part of the larger Bosnian war.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
