This is for the first time any high ranking British official has called for the apology, a demand New Delhi has been making for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Currently on a visit to the Indian sub-continent\u00a0 on \u201cLondon is open\u201d campaign, Sadiq Khan, made this statement, through his official twitter account, while visiting the massacre site Jallianwala Bagh near Amritsar on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is wrong that successive British governments have fallen short of delivering a formal apology to the families of those who were killed,\u201d he said. Earlier he visited New Delhi and Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday he crossed over to<a href=\"https:\/\/apnlive.com\/topic\/pakistan\"> Pakistan<\/a> through wagah border. This was also for the first time when a British high ranking official reached Pakistan by road. He met with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, several other officials and prominent personalities. On Thursday he is in Islamabad and is scheduled to visit Karachi before he returns to London.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Mayor Sadiq Khan, whose grandparents were born in India and parents migrated from Pakistan to UK, said he would visit India and Pakistan to promote the British capital as a destination of choice for trade and cultural ties.<\/p>\n<p>He was quoted saying, &#8220;As someone whose grandparents were born in India, and whose parents moved to London from Pakistan, I feel a deep affinity for the subcontinent,&#8221; said Khan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What excites me most about this trip is that I know it can deliver real benefits for Londoners.
