Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will be appointed soon. The process to appoint new CDS is underway, the Defence Minister said during media briefing on the rollout of the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post has been lying vacant since General Bipin Rawat’s death in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes six months after General Bipin Rawat, India\u2019s first CDS, died in a helicopter crash in Tamli Nadu last year in December. The decision also comes on a day when defence minister approved the Agnipath scheme to provide opportunity to the youth to work for shorter and longer tenures in the armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is eligibility criteria for the post of CDS after Centre’s amendment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In its latest notification, the government has made all serving and recently retired three-star officers \u2014 Lt General, Air Marshal and Vice Admiral \u2014 under the age of 62 eligible for the post of CDS. As per the new rules, the retired chiefs of services will not be considered as the CDS of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CDS is the most senior uniformed officer in rank, the first among equals \u2014 the only four-star officers in the country are the CDS, the chiefs of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. But as per the new rules, all three-star and four-star officers from the three services, including those who retired in the last two years, will be eligible for the vacant post of CDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
