The brutal murder was captured on local CCTV cameras and had shocked the nation.<\/p>\n<p>A CCTV footage reportedly shows the couple walking and chatting in a market in Udumalpet when three men on a bike stop behind them and attack Sankar with sharp weapons. After Sankar stops moving, they attack Kausalya, slashing at her till she collapses. The attackers then go away, apparently without any worry about being recognized.<\/p>\n<p>While Sankar died in the hospital, Kausalya recovered, after a long time, and moved to stay with Sankar&#8217;s family, who are farmers, said media reports.<\/p>\n<p>Kausalya\u2019s family, which belongs to the politically powerful Thevar caste, was allegedly against the inter-caste marriage.<\/p>\n<p>The police had arrested 11 persons in the connection with the case, including the parents of Kausalya, and registered cases under seven different sections in the Indian Penal Code and under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.<\/p>\n<p>Kausalya&#8217;s father Chinnasamy and the men who carried out the attack have been given <a href=\"https:\/\/apnlive.com\/topic\/death-sentence\">death sentence<\/a>. Two others have been convicted as well. Of the remaining five accused, one was awarded the life sentence and one got a five year jail term while Kousalya&#8217;s mother Annalakshmi, her uncle Pandithurai and a college student, Prasanna, were acquitted for want of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>There was tension in the court campus following the pronouncement of the verdict, according to media reports, and there were apprehensions of a fallout in coming days.
