Before Thursday’s uproar in Parliament, the only topic that had been talked across the length and breadth of the country this week had been actor Ranveer Singh’s nude photoshoot. The outrage surrounding the shoot doesn’t seem to end anytime soon. From filing an FIR against him to calling his nude pictures a national issue, the media and people have had a variety of opinions on this matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people in Indore also organised a clothes donation camp for Ranveer to wear instead of baring it all. Yes, the news is a little stagnant these days. What more than a Bollywood actor known for his outlandish wit and unassuming self and married to Bollywood’s biggest woman star to foist the TRP bandwagon onto? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inherent hypocrisy in the debate over Ranveer Singh’s all-too candid photoshoot is not lost on many. Yes, there have been many women actors who have shed clothes for nude photoshoots but why the fuss when a man does it? Did the men of the country get an inferiority complex on seeing the actor’s toned self? Despite the bodybuilding and fitness craze of the last few years, obesity in Indian men has stayed a constant. If you doubt it, please spend some time at your apartment complex’s ponds (I mean swimming pool) or at a public swimming facility and the sight of folds upon folds of adipose tissue crammed into swimming trunks is a sight that will leave you retching (carry a barf bag, for convenience). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many other actors, male and female, have done nude photoshoots before too. Has India become numb to artistic expression (even if in the nude)? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ranveer Singh has always been open to intensity, versatility, and depth. And if one goes through the entire interview and not just the pictures, there is a lot that engages the mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, the photoshoot was done for foreign magazine PAPER with Singh paying homage to American icon Burt Reynolds\u2019 iconic 1972 shoot for Cosmopolitan. In the interview, the 36-year-old said, \u201cIt\u2019s so easy for me to be physically naked. In fact, in some of my performances I\u2019ve been damn naked. You can even see my soul. Now how naked is that? And for me, that\u2019s being actually naked.” The publication even dubbed Ranveer as “the last Bollywood superstar”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some people in the country loved the photos and said that only Ranveer could have pulled this off, others are just trolling him. The actor has been facing a backlash for the past five days now. From being accused of hurting national sentiments to calling him of insufficient intellect, yes this is an approximation of horrendous politically incorrect words, people have done everything and still the outrage does not seem to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A couple in Mumbai, the wife’s a lawyer, have filed an FIR with Mumbai Police against Ranveer Singh for hurting the sentiments of women in general, and insulting their modesty and obscenity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, several Indian women actors have not only done nude photoshoots but have also been applauded for their bravery and what-not. From Sherlyn Chopra to Kiara Advani and Disha Patani they have shot nude pictures for Dabboo Ratnani’s calendar and were praised by tweeple. Male actors like Aamir Khan and Milind Soman have also done nude shoots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media, which is meant for every user to broadcast their opinion, does end up feeding this mass of outrage and fake concern to keep our eyes from the real issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever it maybe, the episode reeks of India’s twisted gender bias and moral policing. Ranveer Singh has shown us that hypocrisy can never be covered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
