Tripura is scheduled to go for polls on February 18, while other two northeastern states \u2013 Meghalaya and Nagaland \u2013 will have elections on February 27.<\/em><\/p>\n With the northeastern states set for the upcoming assemble elections in February, Congress remained out of the picture in Tripurs as the BJP fights hard to establish power in the state which has long been a strong hold of the communist parties.<\/p>\n While Tripura is scheduled to go for the assembly polls on February 18, other two northeastern states \u2013 Meghalaya and Nagaland \u2013 will go for the elections on February 27.<\/p>\n According to political experts, Tripura \u2013 which had earlier witnessed electoral battle between the CPM and the Congress \u2013 will be witnessing a fight for power between the saffron party and the Left in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n Earlier, claiming that the \u201cCongress was not serious about fighting the CPI(M)\u201d in Tripura, former state Congress president Sudip Roy Burman had joined the BJP.<\/p>\n The former Congress leader, who led the state Congress in the 2013 Assembly elections, said, \u201cIn 2013, the CPI(M) had faced strong anti-incumbency but the Congress central leadership had helped the CPM in the state clandestinely for enjoying the party’s support in Parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n And with five other MLAs also joining the saffron party, Burman said, \u201cWe are forced to join the BJP as we found that the Congress is not serious about fighting the CPM.\u201d<\/p>\n Also claiming that the 2018 assembly elections in Tripura will witness a strong fight between the BJP and the Left, CPM politburo member Prakash Karat said at an election rally on Friday, \u201cAll the earlier elections in the state were fought between the Left Front and the Congress but this time, it is a contest between the BJP and the Left Front as Congress leaders and supporters had joined the saffron party.\u201d<\/p>\n To bag the tribal votes in the state, which comprises 31% of total voters, BJP had earlier allied with the Indigenous People\u2019s Front of Tripura (IPFT).<\/p>\n
