India’s two major higher educational institutions –IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay – have dropped two places to 29th and 44th respectively.

The latest list of top 350 Asian universities released by the Times Higher Education (THE) on Tuesday has more Indian varsities figuring in the top list – with the number improving to 42 from last year’s 33. However, according to the report, many Indian institutions across the country have registered a decline in ranking.

“It is a fantastic achievement that India now has 42 universities in the Asia rankings and that the country has improved on 12 of the 13 metrics underlying the rankings,” said Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings at THE.

But with a sharp fall in scores, India’s two major higher educational institutions – Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay – have dropped two places to 29th and 44th respectively.

In the major decline in this year’s ranking, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has gone down from its previous position 41 to 103 in the ‘Asia Universities Rankings 2018’.

However, two new entries – the Indian School of Mines at the 141st position and the Banaras Hindu University at 194th – have marked as a remarkable development in the country. According to the report, among the factors which affected the rankings were teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Stating that India was still a leading Asia’s higher education country, despite many institutions registering a decline, Phil Baty said, “While it has not experienced the same rapid improvement as East Asian nations such as China and while some of its institutions faced declines, India’s overall rise proves that it can make advances year on year.”

The ranking analysis found that the country’s good performance is attributed to points earned in areas of research productivity despite the country’s weak research environment. Another major area of decline in the Indian universities was the teaching reputation.

“The South Asian region has increased its representation in the 2018 ‘THE’ Asia University Rankings, but is struggling to maintain its standing in the face of competition from the East and South-East Asia,” said Baty.
