With security forces continuing efforts to flush out holed up terrorists near the residential quarters inside the Sunjuwan Army camp in Jammu, the ongoing exchange of fire has claimed the lives of five soldiers and a civilian – while four terrorists have been gunned down till Sunday afternoon.

The five martyred Indian Army personnel were identified as Subedar Madan Lal Choudhary, Mohd Ashraf Mir, Havaldar Habib-Ullah Qurashi, Naik Manzoor Ahmed, Lancenaik Mohd Iqbal.

While Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat arrived in Jammu to meet senior commanders earlier in the day, the Army on Sunday said that there was no firing during the night and the major focus is to evacuate people from the family quarters.

Earlier on Saturday, a group of heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists attacked the sprawling camp of the 36 brigade of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry – thereby triggering a gun-battle between security forces and the militants.

The attack – which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the hanging of Afzal Guru, a convict in the 2001 Parliament attack by Jaish – took place in the dark while soldiers and their families were sleeping.

Striking in the wee hours of Saturday, terrorists managed to sneak into the camp from the rear side of the base after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on its periphery.

An official of the Indian Army said, “The terrorists entered the family accommodation complex after which quick response teams cordoned off the area and isolated the terrorists, who are holed up in a few houses (inside the camp).”

Condemning the attack, deputy chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Nirmal Singh said, “It’s a condemnable act. This shows the cowardice of Pakistan who can’t face India directly & sends its people to attack civilians here. There are family quarters around the Camp, so the Army is taking precaution in cordoning the area.”

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has also condemned the terror attack through a tweet post saying “strongly condemn the terror attack on our Army camp in Jammu in which 6 Indians have been martyred. All Indians, across political lines, stand united with our Army men and women. My prayers and thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured.”

The latest attack on an Army camp came months after heavily armed terrorists stormed the Army’s Nagrota camp on the outskirts of Jammu city on November 29, 2016 – claiming the lives of seven Army personnel, including two officers.
