Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud was appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. He succeeded Justice UU Lalit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sworn-in ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the oath of the Office of Chief Justice of India was administered by President Droupadi Murmu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice DY Chandrachud will serve as the head of the Supreme Court till November 10, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to APN, Professor Upendra Baxi spoke about Justice Chandrachud’s liberal, progressive, pro-feminist, and gender-equitable philosophy and hoped that he also influences the culture of constitutional governance in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Applauding Justice Chandrachud’s judgements, Prof Baxi said the new CJI has participated in progressive opinions and written some of them and has also designated ideas of inter-generational justice, of intersectionality, and gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice Chandrachud has asserted that the Constitution should reach each and everyone and he will exercise a giant influence on the courts, Professor Baxi continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further spoke about the turn of events on Justice Chandrachud’s appointment and said the fundamental rights to constitutional remedies might find greater resonance in his tenure. The Apex Court is bound by Article 32, however, it can decide the matter and Justice Chandrachud will be responsible and responsive, Professor Baxi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking about Justice Chandrachud’s being a master in asking hard questions to the government, Professor Baxi argued that by asking hard questions one brings out the best in the argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further quoted the 17th-century exponent of jurisprudence, Jeremy Bentham, and said, \u201cA law is made by judge and company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Upendra Baxi also spoke about the cracks in the collegium and highlighted the challenges for Justice Chandrachud. He said such cracks appear every now and then and the appointment process cannot be made transparent anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
