In an incident of manual scavenging, two workers died of suffocation while cleaning an unused sewer pit in a new house in Tamil Nadu. The incident happened in Kondur village in Villupuram on Monday. The police alleged asphyxiation as a preliminary reason for their deaths.

The deceased, identified as 38-year-old G Iyanar and 35-year-old K Manikandan, hailed from Paakam village. The two were engaged in constructing a house attached to a grocery store near the Kandamangalam area. The reports state the project was almost complete, but only the walls of the sewer had to be plastered.

Locals state that Iyanar and Manikandan were working in the sewer pit when they died on the spot. After receiving information about the incident, the police rushed to the scene.

Superintendent of Police N Sreenatha said the sewer had not yet been used. The men may have suffocated due to a lack of air circulation or due to a leakage of toxic gases from nearby sewers. The police have sent their body for an autopsy at the Mundiyambakkam Government Medical College and Hospital.
