A man in Chhattisgarh\u2019s Bilaspur is protesting for the removal of a liquor shop. Such protests are common but the way this man has been protesting is unconventional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanjay Singhani, who is often seen dressed up like Mahatma Gandhi, is protesting in a unique way for removing the liquor shop. He has been lying on his funeral pyre near the Bandhwapara liquor shop for the last four days and is on a hunger strike. He has said that if by December 2, the administration does not remove the liquor shop, he will set his funeral pyre on fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, Singhani has been constantly demanding from the district administration to remove the liquor shop from the locality and from near the school. Along with the people of the locality, school children are also seen participating in this movement. Liquor shop is being operated in Arvind Nagar Bandhwapara of Sarkanda area of Bilaspur. Near this liquor shop, there is a school and residential area within 50 meter radius from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the liquor shop, several small shops selling tobacco products, snacks for alcoholics have mushroomed in the area and a crowd gathers here everyday. This has led to a spike in crimes, Sighani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In such a situation, to get the liquor shop removed from this place, he is staging a unique protest by lying on his funeral pyre. Earlier also, he has sat on Dharna at Nehru Chowk demanding liquor ban and this has not yielded any result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Complaint filed in public hearing in vain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Last week, the people of the locality had reached the Collector’s public hearing demanding the removal of the liquor shop. Here, the women told the Collector that there is illegal sale of liquor throughout the night near Chowk, in which sub-inspectors, salesmen and employees of the Excise Department are in connivance. Some local people are provided liquor from this shop of the department, which is sold illegally throughout the night. They also gave CCTV footage of liquor being sold at night to the collector. But, no action was taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
