The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday confirmed the first-ever outbreak of the Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea. The hemorrhagic fever virus, as deadly as Ebola, has at least killed 9 people in the country’s western Kie Ntem Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marburg virus disease is a highly virulent disease that causes hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality ratio of up to 88 percent. So far, 16 suspected cases of the Marburg Virus have also been reported in the province. The province is currently under quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, stated that Marburg is highly infectious. Thanks to the rapid and decisive action by the Equatorial Guinean authorities in confirming the disease, emergency response can get to full steam quickly so that we save lives and halt the virus as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within seven days of infection, acute hemorrhagic symptoms associated with MVD begin to manifest. It may take a few days for the initial symptoms to appear, such as fever, body aches, and malaise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
